Colorscape

Post by Wistahe »

I've been working on some computer vision stuff with the hope of implementing the idea of a focus. It will be based on some papers on eye movement I got while working at a vision research lab a few years back. While implementing principles of composition would be a long term goal, that will be really difficult with things like the rule of 3rds and all matters of form. For the time being I'm hoping to start small by interpreting paintings of objects set against abstract "color scapes" which will allow me to focus on studying color theory and make use of current algorithms for salience and object detection. I'll update this thread as I go, let me know if you have any questions! Although I'm still figuring it out

Update: I have been looking into opencv's saliency detection (what parts of an image should be focused on) and I am feeling a bit more confident this might work! For some test data to work with I have been using the Starry Night and was pleasantly surprised to find the objectness salience detection did a really good job of capturing the parts of the painting that were most recognizable. First it noticed the sky with the swirling rift, then the cypress tree, and finally the big swirl in particular. I'm thinking that the long rectangles returned by objectness saliency should be used to direct attention. That makes a lot of sense, long object give a natural direction along which to scan.

I was a bit discouraged today because what I was working on didn't go anywhere, but I found this article which describes something that looks exactly like something I'd like to do

Although I guess this means I'll have to finally start learning deep neural networks. Just can't escape 'em, huh?
